CHEM 1110 - General Chemistry I
General Chemistry I is the first half of general chemistry methods and models, the science of the structure and reactions of matter. The course adheres to the standards and topics of the American Chemical Society (ACS) General Chemistry first term. Students whose program of study requires only one chemistry course should consider taking CHEM 1060, Survey of Chemistry. General Chemistry I includes scientific method; measurement and data analysis; properties of matter and energy; structure and properties of atoms; chemical nomenclature and composition; chemical bonding; molecular structure; molecular interactions; properties of solids, liquids, gases and aqueous solutions; chemical energy and calorimetry; chemical reaction quantities; and properties of acid-base, ion-precipitation and redox reactions. The laboratory methods and techniques include: measure and dispense liquids with volumetric glassware; weigh materials with digital balances; separate materials by gravity and vacuum filtration; dissolve and precipitate solids; dilute and mix solutions; centrifuge solutions; measure light absorbance and concentration by spectrophotometry; use pH meters and indicators; perform analytical titrations; generate and collect gases in reactions; control heating plate, gas flame and oven heat sources; measure temperature and heat exchange in calorimetry; measure voltage and current in electrochemical processes; and complete worksheets with calculations and data analysis for each experiment. Prerequisites & Notes Prerequisite: MATH 1710 or higher level math course, or CHEM 1000, or ACT Math subscore of 22 or higher, or departmental approval through placement testing. 4 Credit Hours - 3 Lecture Hours - 3 Lab Hours (F, S, U) Note: * Course designed for transfer. Approved course for TBR/Northeast State’s General Education Core.
