Organic Chemistry I is an examination of the compounds of carbon, including the uniqueness of carbon bonding and molecular structure. Coverage includes nomenclature and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols and ethers. Small-scale laboratory synthesis of organic molecules and instrumental methods include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR) and mass spectrometry (MS). Analytical methods also include various methods of chromatography.

Prerequisite: CHEM 1120 with a grade of C or better.
